The 1999 cult classic movie “Office Space’ chronicles the cautionary tale of Peter Gibbons, a mid-level employee toiling away at his miserable job at Initech until he discovers what really matters to him. The movie’s plot arc follows Peter being micromanaged in a role with numerous supervisors who sting him over the same mind-numbing details daily.
After a hypnosis session gone awry, Peter oversleeps one morning, late for work and for the first time without a care in the world. He ignores office protocol, dress code, takes his awful boss’ parking spot and becomes what most would consider an overall terrible employee.
As the line goes – hilarity ensues, and despite his effort and performance dropping, Peter rises in the company as he becomes happier.
But there are a lot of lessons about what makes people happy at work, and at the core is one of Charlotte Marketing Consultants guiding philosophies:
HAPPY PEOPLE DO BETTER WORK THAN UNHAPPY PEOPLE
In the film, Peter is harassed about his inability to use cover letters for his TPS Reports, with their functional necessity being secondary to the instruction of their use. It’s these small details that large corporations fall victim to enforcing, where our team is encouraged to think entrepreneurially and do what they think makes sense.
We prioritize hiring the right person for our Account Manager role, and they teach someone how to think their way through challenges instead of just focusing on exactly what to do.
One of the main themes of Office Space is Peter’s relationship with his actual work space, where he is trapped between a colleague stuck saying “one minute please” on the phone and another playing the radio “at a reasonable volume.” He eventually cracks and knocks down his cubicle walls and cleans a recent fishing trip catch on his desk.
At Charlotte Marketing Consultants, we are currently planning an office remodel with the help of our team for a fresh look in 2019. Happy environments make a happy team, and we believe that permeates into everything we do. Our client’s customers feel that, and we know we come to work with a smile on every day, even when we are challenged and pushed outside of our comfort zone.
